Naine, kes ei kõhkle: Yasmyn julgustab elama iseendale

Dear readers, it is once again time to bring you the story of an exceptionally persistent, talented, and fiercely driven woman. Within the scope of this mental health month, we are thrilled to be talking to none other than Sinencia Jasmine Kass (21), or the musician Yasmyn, whose lyrics about a zest for life and self-love offer inspiring food for thought, and whose bold attitude sets an example for battling insecurities.

Yasmyn is a rapidly rising R'n'B artist in the Estonian music scene whose extravagant style sets her apart from many other performers. Due to her colorful personality and freedom of expression, Yasmyn has won the hearts of thousands of fans and has become a muse for our BonBon team. We are inspired by women who face their fears and listen to the voice of their heart, which is why Yasmyn is also the model for our new, even bolder autumn season collections.

In our latest blog, we introduce Yasmyn more closely, discussing music, mental health, the challenges of being a woman, and much more. Get ready for a read full of hot energy, and if you haven't listened to R'n'B music yet, play Yasmyn’s newest self-titled album, YASMYN, in the background.

Extravagant style is a form of self-love

We asked what Yasmyn’s stage name means to her and what principles it is built on. "Yasmyn is very confident and free-spirited. She doesn't care about the opinions of others, and she is true to herself. Just as Yasmyn is an encouragement to me, I want her to be an encouragement to many other women and men. Don't be afraid to test your boundaries and pay attention to your appearance. In my eyes, vanity is not a negative thing, but rather a way to show that you take care of yourself and don't hold back. Dressing up and wearing beautiful clothes does not make you an egoist, as society often wants us to believe. On the contrary, your appearance is your unique self-expression, and if you give yourself the freedom to be exactly who you want to be, you will be a happier and better person in this world. And it is exactly as that—free—that I want to step in front of people as Yasmyn."

The artist's eye-catching style is often equated with sexiness and sex appeal, even though, for her, sexiness lies in a person’s inner world and their skills. "For me, what society classifies as provocative is often not intended to be provocative at all. The fact that I have a feminine body, that I have curves and nipples, is nothing to be ashamed of, nor does it oblige me to cover myself from head to toe just to avoid appearing too sexual. I don't actually consider myself a sexual person at all, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy wearing form-fitting clothes or revealing cuts. How someone interprets sexiness for themselves varies greatly. For me, in addition to appearance, passion for one's creative work is important. I like it when people talk about something that fascinates them and that they are good at. That is sexy. Even in my own case, for example, when I give interviews and get to talk about my music, I feel very sexy because I get to share something that is important to me. So, in the end, it is a person's essence that makes them attractive, not revealing clothes. Also, the stereotypical 'femininity equals sexiness' mentality doesn't hold true for me. I believe everyone has the right to define their own sexiness."

Forget modesty – beautiful lingerie doesn't have to be hidden under clothes

Yasmyn believes we should treat our choice of lingerie with as much care and attention as we do the rest of our clothes. "It is very important that we wear beautiful lingerie every day, not just for special occasions. For me, it makes a huge difference whether I put on a cool lingerie set or just something random that happens to be at hand. I have discovered that my mood changes noticeably when I put on beautiful lingerie. And for lingerie, the same belief applies to me as with other styles – I always make my choices for myself. If someone else confirms that I look good, that is only a bonus."

Previously, the artist saw wearing a bra as just another way society pressures women, something she wanted to rebel against. "Before discovering BonBon lingerie, I rarely wore bras at all. Primarily, I did it because of society, where wearing a bra is somehow an obligation. That is why it is so important to find lingerie that meets all your criteria and makes you truly desire to wear it. With BonBon lingerie, I am even excited to be able to wear such beautiful designs on my body. I feel that with this brand, I don't have to hold back my personality, but can wear lingerie as art and express my essence through different colors and cuts. Nowadays, I choose bras with the mindset that if I feel like it, I can make them visible in my outfit. I really like all kinds of eye-catching straps and ribbons that remain visible under clothes or high-cut strings that reach above the waistline. And I must mention that BonBon lingerie is also very comfortable. You immediately feel that every woman's needs have been thought of."

Femininity has a million different, equally beautiful incarnations

At BonBon, we love sharing different understandings of femininity and what it means to be a woman. Yasmyn also agrees that diversity of opinion is very important because "femininity" is not something that should be defined by rules. "I don't consider myself a feminist, but I do stand up for women's rights. And more precisely, for the rights of femininity, because femininity is something that exists in every person – it's in a man, it's in a woman, it's in transgender people, it's in cisgender people. This means that men can also cry and be vulnerable. Through how I portray myself publicly as Yasmyn, I want to invite people to open up both sides of themselves, both the feminine and the masculine. So society probably wouldn't label me a 'proper' feminist because that term has become very militant and narrow-minded. But I am, in that sense, two-sided."

Yasmyn continues that her music is also 'two-sided,' meaning intended for both men and women. To date, she has released two albums, and when listening to her songs, a universal message of finding oneself and self-love resonates. "In my music, I don't speak directly about femininity; rather, I try to highlight the theme of self-care and self-love. Because to be a woman, you don't have to be a woman! Do you understand? Mostly I think of trans women in this regard. It is important that you feel feminine yourself, not whether you fit society's criteria for it. My music and performance style also break many standards. When I perform, I might wear baggy pants and a sports top. I might sweat and dance like crazy and be somewhat very forceful and masculine. Yet, at those moments, I feel the most sexy and feminine. It is time to let go of the belief that the symbol of femininity is a delicate girlishness. For me, femininity is power and capability. Each of us has the power to inspire and create because we are queens."

Yasmyn believes that her commanding attitude and egalitarian values stemmed from strong female role models in her family. "There have been very few men in our family, which is why since I was little, I have had the belief that I can do whatever I want without needing approval from any man first. But later in life, I realized how strongly the opinions and criticism of men can affect a woman's development. If I had the power to change something for the better in society, that is exactly what I would change. That as women, we could be free from all opinions aimed at us, that we would be listened to because of our wisdom and not diminished because of what we are wearing or how we have decided to look!"

If you do work you love, all difficulties can be overcome

As we know, the life of an artist presents its own challenges, to overcome which one must train oneself to be very mentally strong. Yasmyn couldn't imagine her life without creating and wants to be active in the music world for a long time. "I dream very big! At the same time, I don't want to think too much about the future, because then I will just keep dreaming and not do the work. But I really hope that all my efforts will bear fruit in the future and that if I work hard enough, everything I dream of can still come true."

To help make her dream come true, Yasmyn has realized that one must know how to praise oneself and not be modest about one's goals. "Recently, I realized that I don't have to be ashamed of the fact that I want attention. I like being the center of attention; I like it when people say I'm beautiful or when they praise my voice. That's why I perform, so why should I be ashamed? And of course, behind that beautiful face and voice is a message that hopefully resonates with people in different ways. I am often asked what this or that song is about, but I don't want to set any limits for the listeners. It is up to everyone to feel for themselves what resonates with them and if it does. I am inspired primarily by the different emotions that I translate into the language of music. This process makes me very happy. But that doesn't mean it isn't difficult. One does not exclude the other, and it should be difficult. You just have to surround yourself with people who motivate you and help you get through the difficulties."

Mental health presents challenges to everyone, which is why it is not a shame to seek help

October is the global mental health awareness month, in light of which we must ask about Yasmyn's tips and advice for coping with difficulties. "I think we all suffer from mental health-related issues—even if we don't have a diagnosis. People have so many demons, and I don't know how to say what the best way is to overcome them. But one thing is certain: the sooner you seek help, the better. I can only speak about the ways that have helped me. And mainly, it is just lying to yourself. It may sound quite problematic, but it is actually a very effective approach for lifting your mood. I believe that all the words we speak are like spells that shape how we feel at the moment. The more you think dark thoughts, the more darkness comes into your life. That is why you sometimes have to lie to yourself and say: 'I can handle this!', even if you don't believe it at that moment. For me personally, it works very well. I am sure that I have reached where I am in my career because I have shown confidence in certain places, even when I was very insecure on the inside. I wouldn't say it's fake. I do it for myself, to encourage myself and to grow as a person. Leaving an impression of confidence instills in me that, yes, I really am confident."

"On the other hand, it is important not to close your eyes to your own bad traits," Yasmyn warns. "In society, there are so many people who are angry and depressed, and therefore they pour their anger everywhere in the world. They do it because they are broken, and because of their anger, they lose loved ones and friends. And instead of looking into themselves, they blame everyone else around them. You have to realize that sometimes the fault really is in yourself."

The other tactic through which Yasmyn keeps her mental health strong is experiencing all emotions. "I am very happy to have a partner by my side who understands when I'm in a bad mood and doesn't try to force a positive attitude on me right away. If you don't have anyone by your side, then you have to monitor it yourself, to let yourself just be sad sometimes and feel difficult emotions. Because if you keep suppressing them, it is impossible to grow as a person or move forward. I still have many difficulties in letting myself be weak. I have drawn a very confident picture of myself for the public, and sometimes it is hard to distinguish where the boundary lies between the real me and Yasmyn. Often people think I'm arrogant or 'stuck up.' That is very hurtful and is not true. Few just know the 'real me' and form their opinion based solely on prejudices. Confidence is too easily equated with arrogance. There is a huge difference there, and I believe that if you have ever come to talk to me, you understand that I am actually a very friendly person. Sometimes even shy, and I fear people as much as they fear me."

"Regardless, creating a confident alter ego is a good practice that I would recommend people try – even if you aren't artists or public figures," Yasmyn considers the art of transformation a very powerful tool for strengthening mental health. "Create a version of the most perfect self. That's why I say that my only idol is myself, in 30 years. Yasmyn inspires me every day, and those character traits she embodies are motivation for me to keep striving forward."

Social media is a thin line between motivation and self-pity

"It took me a long time to be able to make an idol of myself and to understand that the people I admire on Instagram aren't real," Yasmyn explains, emphasizing the importance of reducing social media consumption for the sake of mental well-being. "If you are having trouble accepting your body, delete Instagram and TikTok. It is necessary to understand what is real and what is photoshop. All those things that negatively affect your self-esteem – just eliminate them from your life. I have personal experience where photos taken of my body were tuned and edited, and that made me feel very bad for a long time. After seeing those pictures, my brain really wanted to look like that photoshopped version of myself. I know that not every woman has such an experience, but subconsciously, edited images on social media still affect our self-esteem. That is why you should delete those platforms until you are stronger and able to account for such influences."

Yasmyn encourages women to remain authentic to themselves and, despite all social media trends and societal opinions, to live life according to their own rules. "My message to you, Estonian women, is to be bold, free, and extravagant! It is as simple as that, because life is much more fun that way. And when you are having fun, it brings even more self-confidence. There is no need to overthink every little thing – if you are doubting whether to change your hair color, then just do it! If you don't like it, you can always dye your hair back. It is the same with all other decisions – nothing is set in stone. You should try things out in life, enjoy your body, and show it to the world with pride!"
