PESUDISAINERI TÖÖPÄEV: JAAPANI SAMURAIDEST UUE KOLLEKTSIOONINI

How to create lingerie that resonates with as many women as possible, boosts self-confidence, and adds a touch of feminine mystery? BonBon Lingerie's head designer Mirjam Mäeots knows the answer and introduces you to the imaginative world of lingerie design.

About the designer

Mirjam Mäeots has been the head designer at BonBon Lingerie for two years. She was interested in fashion design as early as middle school, but the young woman truly spread her wings in England, where she went as an Erasmus exchange student from the Estonian Academy of Arts.

After graduating from the University for the Creative Arts and completing an internship in London, the talented designer returned to her homeland, soon joining BonBon Lingerie.

According to Mirjam, working at BonBon is a major challenge for her, as she has previously considered her style to be rather masculine. Fortunately, she has proven that her creativity is boundless and that it pays to face challenges with confidence!

A collection needs a foundation and a creative designer

Young business students mistakenly believe that the foundation of successful business activity is sufficient financial resources or a memorable name.

In reality, everything starts with a business idea. Similarly, the prerequisite for the birth of every new lingerie collection is a designer overflowing with inspiration who, keeping the clients' expectations and the company's vision in mind, shapes their vision into a beautiful work of art.

With every BonBon collection, a new fantasy world seems to open up, helping to discover new facets of oneself. Each collection has its own face and charm, offering not only comfort but also true sensual pleasure, as is customary for a work of art.

Before the seamstresses sit down at their machines, the designer goes through several work stages:

1. Searching for inspiration

Inspiration is the foundation of every collection. While the designer connects with their creative side, they must also consider the latest fashion trends and materials selected for the new season from trade fairs or long-term partners. Additionally, one must proceed from how many collections and what types of products are expected from them.

The situation becomes complicated when the area that inspires the designer is not associated with sensual lingerie. To ensure the designer does not have to give up an inspiring theme, they collect various imagery and create mood boards.

Visual information helps expand the theme and thus makes it easier to shape it into something suitable for a lingerie collection. Mood boards are helpful both in choosing a color palette and in creating various details. Sometimes, however, the material itself is such a great source of inspiration that it begins to tell its own story.

That is why Mirjam often builds a concept specifically around the material.

2. Sketches and product cards

BonBon's sketches are completed either by drawing by hand or with the help of a computer. Each collection includes a number of completely new patterns that have not existed before, as well as a certain amount of refreshes made based on previous collections.

Since BonBon already has a fairly rich product history, it is always good to draw inspiration from old products and adapt them into a contemporary design language. It is possible to create visually new solutions for base patterns that have won customers' hearts. Therefore, if you have a piece of favorite lingerie that is no longer produced, there is hope that it will soon reach stores in an even more beautiful and trendy form.

In reality, inspiration, design, and materials go hand in hand. Within the first two stages, there is a constant adjustment of ideas, and this requires the designer to be flexible in changing their vision.

It is not rare for the concept to change during the process. At the end of this stage, technical drawings are completed, which, along with other necessary information (materials, stitch types, etc.), are put onto product cards.

3. Product development and patterns

In this stage, pattern makers check the viability of the created designs. In order for the lingerie to adorn the wearer and be comfortable, one must also account for the laws of physics.

€p>The task of the pattern makers is to check whether the designer has correctly applied what they learned in high school physics, and additional corrections are made if necessary. The patterns are finalized.

4. Prototypes

Finally, it is time for the first prototypes. Their fit is evaluated with the help of both mannequins and a test group that wears the initial models for a certain period and subsequently provides feedback on the material, comfort, fit, and product properties.

Depending on the evaluations, corrections are either made or the collection is immediately given the green light.

5. Product presentation

An internal company presentation of the products takes place, and final suggestions and corrections are made before the collection is finally approved and sent to production.

The birth of the Autumn/Winter 19-20 collection

Mirjam Mäeots lifts the veil of secrecy on the AW19-20 collection that went on sale at the end of the summer.

In the world that opens up with the BonBon Lingerie autumn-winter collection, strong women take center stage.

This is a collection in which strength and independence are intertwined with feminine allure and wisdom. Every woman deserves the chance to experience what it feels like to be invincible - with BonBon, this becomes a daily privilege.
